Sculpting in Blender?

Work In Progress / 11 November 2022

A couple of weeks ago I watched a youtube video from Laura Gallagher where she is talking about sculpting likenesses in Blender.

After watching the video I decided to give Blender a try. Hence I started a likeness study of Dwayne Jonson, with the intention to do everything in Blender.  But...

Yes, Blender's viewport really is superior to ZBrush, and the sculpting tools kinda work the same. However, there is a bunch of tools available in ZBrush that I miss in Blender, and the tools in Blender appear less responsive. DynaMesh and ZRemesher work way better in ZBrush. And finally, Blender's UI and workflows feel less optimized for speed, eg. Going up and down in resolution is missing hotkeys. Also reprojecting in Blender with ShrinkWrap is a painful clunky workflow.

After a couple of hours in Blender, I gave up and returned to ZBrush for the actual sculpting.

But once you've seen your sculpts inside Blender, it's admittedly a bit hard to settle for the simple lights, shaders, and wonky perspective that ZBrush has to offer. So in the future I might be going back and forth between Blender and ZBrush when working on likenesses.

I also still do Retopo in Modo. Now that the base topology has been laid out. It should be easier to bring the sculpt back into Blender for further refinement.
